The Game Keepers Secret Is A Great Community Pub

The new management of the Game Keepers Secret Country Inn are doing their best to improve the venue and support our community.
Its an olde English country pub style, with cosy booths, polished timber bar and a large open fireplace which in winter is the focal point of the venue. The hospitality is welcoming with friendly locals serving behind the bar and at the tables.

The menu is comprised of English and Australian dishes such as: braised lamb shanks, beef & guinness pie, corned beef and sticky date puddings, but you can still get a big Aussie rib eye steak or bushman’s kangaroo fillet or go for one of our fresh seafood or fish dishes.

If the decor, hospitality and menu were not enough then you might be surprised at how much the management care about our community. The Lions Club of Diggers Rest meets at the inn once a month for a delicious three course meal that is well priced for the great quality. On top of that, the Inn's management recently extended their generosity by giving guests high value dinner vouchers to help the community raise money.

Have you been to the Game Keepers Secret lately and do you have other examples of their support for people in need?

Maggots In HighPoint Food Court

A word of advise, be careful when you take food from strangers. Chloe McSaveney was horrified by the discovery of maggots in her sushi.

At a table at Maribyrnong's Highpoint shopping centre during a busy lunch hour last month, the university student started to splutter and panic.

When her boyfriend demanded an explanation from the shop, Sushi Sushi, staff threw the roll in the bin, and offered a refund, Ms McSaveney said.

Highpoint centre staff rushed her to the medical clinic upstairs and retrieved the infested sushi roll. It was whisked away by Maribyrnong Council health inspectors for analysis in a laboratory.

Two weeks later, the results were in – fly larvae. Maggots.

"The laboratory found a single live maggot in the sample provided," said the council's environmental health officer, Jonathan Brett.

"The presence of a maggot is unlikely to cause physical harm."

Ms McSaveney said she was still reeling from emotional impact.

Comment is being sought from Sushi Sushi.

Five Great Places To Eat Around Sunbury

1. Jacks Wine Bar

Situated near... nowhere... This bar is a great surprise for anyone who loves atmosphere. Jack's Bar when opened in 2012 was instantly popular. Initially the patrons were local and now people come from all over Victoria to experience the quirky, rustic decor. It is worth dropping in just to look at how Malcolm has reused many secondhand building materials to renovate an old shed. The ciders and beers are good, great wood fired pizzas and the meals are a reasonable price.

2. Royal Hotel

In the heart of Sunbury. Very affordable and the charms of a country pub in the heart of an outer city. This is the place people who like to eat a hearty lunch at a discount price or who need a break from shopping. The service is quick and the food is good.

3. Soltan Pepper
Setting the standards for other restaurants. The ingredients are fresh and the views of Sunbury are nice. At times it can be a little crowded and the service a little slow but that the price of a great place to eat. Soltan Pepper has been a tremendous success in Romsey and recently brought their service to the Sunbury township. Did we mention the view?

4. Mount Macedon Hotel
Everyone is pleased that the hotel has reopened. The premises have been beautifully restored, it's open 7 days a week, and there's a good variety of meals. You often order pizzas at the bar and the scenery is wondeful. Of course, after your lunch, you could tour around the Mount to explore the gardens and the top.

5. Bombay Marsala Restaurant
Most people like Indian foods and this is a quality place to eat. It has both eat in and take away and the food is delicious. Being reasonably new, many folk do not know about it so it's easy to get a booking most nights and the service is quick. We have been there many times and enjoy the butter chicken and prawn malay.
