Sunbury Quilters are Putting on a Show on 14 / 15 June 2014

The Sunbury Stitchers and Quilters welcome everyone to come along to the biennial Quilt Show.

There will be well known patchwork shops and a wonderful display of the very popular creations. There will be time to chat and relax with enjoyable morning and enjoy an afternoon teas, as well as a light lunch with the group.

A quilt will be raffled to raise proceeds for The Heart Foundation.

And, if you've ever been interested in the craft then find about getting involved...

The group of stitchers and quilters love sewing, fabric, and getting together to learn, create and chat. They meet every Tuesday evening from 7:30pm to 9:30pm in the local Sunbury Anglican Church Hall. Moreover, they also occasionally get together, formally or informally, for other events such as workshops, quilt-ins and celebrations.

Barry Hall Set To Line-Up Against Diggers Rest

Barry Hall has been confirmed to play for the Broadford Kangaroos and their encounter with the Diggers Rest Burras on Sunday the 8th of June (Queen’s Birthday Weekend) at Diggers Rest’s home-ground.

‘Big, Bad, Bustling Barry’ is expected to draw a massive crowd. The former Saint, Swan and Bulldog will line-up at full-forward, hoping to knock off the grand-finalist from last year.

Hall kicked 746 goals in his 289 games, but is probably more known for his less-than-friendly behaviour on field. We all remember that hit on Brent Staker. If you haven’t seen it before, you should also check out his head-lock on North Melbourne’s Scott Thompson. To this day no one know how he got out of that one.

Wearing the number 1 for Broadford, Hall is setting the precedent. He is saying: “I’m number one, so you better get out of my way and let me put on a show”. And I don’t know about you guys, but I’m not gonna get in his way.

This is the kind of thing that gets people excited about local footy again, and even though its not in Sunbury, it is worth checking out as it is only a stone’s throw away. Plus, the Burra Burgers off the barbie are to die for.

Gisborne Steam & Engine Rally And Tractor Pull - 18 May 2014

The Annual Rally and Tractor Pull is a big day with many hundreds of people attending.... Society members, visitors from other clubs, and the general public.

All efforts are made to have all the Society's activities on display and operating.

Visitor exhibitors free, and basic camping facilities are available for exhibitors who wish to camp on Saturday night.  Exhibitors who travel some distance often arrive and set up on Saturday afternoon, and enjoy hospitality and a meal in the evening.  Exhibitors must be able to show evidence of current insurance.

Attractions and activities at the rally include....

• Vintage Stationary Engines and Machinery.
• Vintage Tractor Pull.
• Threshing, Baling or Chaff Cutting Demonstration.
• Big steam in operation: Traction Engine, Steam Roller, Portable Engine, Perry Loco.

Earth Festival Could Put Diggers Rest on the Map

Would you do something meaningful? Do you care about our town, community and what is happening to the earth?

Earth fairs and festivals are popping up around the world to give people a better life, show them a better environment and encourage them to have a better future. Rob Mackay believes that our environment is at risk and wants to put Diggers Rest on the map of Australia by running a great day out. What is an Earth Festival?

Entertainment

Performers are invited to sing, act, and show their talents to highlight the importance of looking after our place. Even if you only care about art, you’ll find a place at this festival. Live bands play in concerts throughout the day and evening, and you’ll see performance arts, like dances. Visual artists like painters, movie-makers, tattoo-artists, decorators and sculptures bring their creations to this event. The festival also features a market with all kinds of homemade wares.
 

Children's Activities

Children's Activity Area you’ll find crafts, games, face painting, storytelling, and a hands-on activities for children of all ages. Activities are intended to educate, entertain and inspire youth, in the spirit of Earth Day. Participants usually learn how to make paper, find out about recycling, make gift cards from recycled materials, and learn how to visit wild areas without disturbing the environment. Children’s stage features youth-oriented performances throughout the day.

Market

Local produce makers, craftsmen, gardeners and recycle collectors present their wares for public sale. The market offers an array of goods for everyone who wants to do their bit and find good deals. This festival would take place mainly outside. All of the workshops, concerts, stalls, and other venues have tents to house them, but everyone stays outside for the most part.

Exhibitions

An exhibition area showcases products and technologies that can make your home more environmentally sustainable. If you're building a new structure, or adding to an existing home, alternative home-building technologies, such as straw bale and steel-frame construction, would be of interest. Find out about energy- and resource-saving products and materials, like energy-efficient appliances and low-energy windows. A wide variety of solar electric systems – to help you get off the grid – would be shown.

Is an Earth Festival feasible?

Diggers Rest is a great place for the event. We have one of the most community minded societies in Australia and we have organisations who are likely to back such an event. We have the land and the know how to run great events.

When would it begin?

Firstly, lets see if we can put together a committee. A good time frame is six months and good weather helps a lot. So probably close to Christmas. The most difficult task would be getting the word out so we would need to have enough time to invite the entertainers and exhibitors.

What about money?

The event should aim to produce a viable profit. Funds raised by the event would ideally be directed towards Australian victims of climate change (bush fires, floods, cyclones).

Would if be an annual event?

One step at a time. Lets see if we can pull the first one off and learn from it.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee - May 2014

The Boiler House Theatre, Directed by Bianca James, presents a hilarious show not to be missed.

A junior high school gym is set up to host the county spelling finals. Winners from local elementary and middle schools begin to arrive and check in with the bee's long-time hostess—and Former champion—Rona Lisa Pereti.

Audience volunteers are also welcomed to the stage. A glitch: Speller Olive Ostrovsky does not have her entrance Fee; she hopes her father will set there soon to straighten it out. Vice Principal Douglas Panch of Lake Hemingway-Dos Passos Junior High is announced as the day's word pronouncer - he's a last minute substitute for an ailing superintendent. Panch has a dubious track record at the bee but will try to do better this time.

The rules are explained. When a speller misses a word a bell will ring - ding - and the speller must immediately leave the stage, escorted, by the bee's comfort-counsellor, Mitch Mahoney.
